Can you take the UK driving theory test in Farsi?
A straight answer for Persian speakers, and the fastest way to prepare when English is your second language.
SHORT ANSWER
What this means if Persian is your first language
Most Persian speakers in the UK take the test in English. That is very doable, but the challenge is rarely the driving rules themselves. It is the wording: questions are short, precise and full of terms you may know in Persian but not yet in English.
The approach that works is simple: understand the rule in Persian, then practise the question in English until the English wording feels as familiar as your own language.
English terms that catch Persian speakers out
| In the test | Meaning | فارسی |
|---|---|---|
| Give way | Let other traffic go first | حق تقدم دادن |
| Overtake | Pass a slower vehicle | سبقت گرفتن |
| Dual carriageway | Road with a central reservation | جادهی دوطرفه با جداکننده |
| Hard shoulder | Emergency lane on a motorway | شانهی اضطراری بزرگراه |
| Junction | Where roads meet | تقاطع |
| Stopping distance | Thinking distance plus braking distance | مسافت توقف |
| Developing hazard | Something that makes you change speed or direction | خطر در حال شکلگیری |
| Vulnerable road users | Pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders | کاربران آسیبپذیر جاده |

Questions people ask
Can I take the UK driving theory test in Farsi?
Not in England, Scotland or Wales. Since April 2014 the DVSA theory test is only available in English or Welsh, or in British Sign Language. In Northern Ireland, nidirect lists Farsi among the voiceover languages for the theory test.
Can I bring an interpreter?
No, not in Great Britain. Foreign-language voiceovers and interpreters were withdrawn from driving tests in April 2014.
Is there an official Farsi version of the questions?
GOV.UK says some revision materials are translated by approved organisations, but the test itself can only be taken in English, Welsh or British Sign Language.
How long should I prepare if English is my second language?
It depends on your English and how often you practise. A good rule: keep taking full mock tests in English and book the real test once you pass them comfortably, not just occasionally.
Where do I book the test?
Only on GOV.UK. Unofficial booking websites can charge more than the £23 fee.
